Gear oil grades

For example, most modern gearboxes require a GL-oil, and separate differentials (where fitted) require a GL-oil. While they take the same form, the viscosity grades for gear oils are on a different scale than the viscosity grades for an engine oil. The viscometrics for gear oils are standardized in SAE J306. Base Oil Type – The type of base oil used should be determined by the operating conditions, gear type and other factors. Choosing an appropriate viscosity grade is usually as simple as finding the recommendation in a component’s maintenance manual. It is suitable for a wide range of Industrial, Agricultural and Commercial applications calling for an EP Gear Oil. To account for changing temperatures oil is manufactured through the use of additives so that it can have multiple grades of viscosity, or multiple weights. One weight will be a winter weight and the other will be the hot weight.


So you may see gear oil listed as 75W-which gives you both the winter and hot weights of the oil. Gear lubricant viscosity grades should not be confused with engine oil viscosity grades. A gear lubricant and an engine oil having the same viscosity will have widely different SAE viscosity grade designations as defined in the two viscosity classifications.

Most of them are obsolete for automotive purposes at this point, with only GL-gear oil and GL-gear oil being used in modern vehicles. They’re all a little bit different. These oils are designed primarily for low-use manual transmissions.


Manual gearboxes and differentials use rather highly viscous hypoid gear oils compared to engine oils. GEAR OILS Gear oil is a fluid lubricant. Gearboxes do not have an oil pump, so the high viscosity is needed to distribute the oil and to keep it on the metal surfaces, as only the lowermost part of the gears is located in the oil sump. ISO oil grades are identified by their viscosity grade or VG.


SAE grade equivalents to ISO grades are approximate, since they are based on viscosity measurements at different temperatures. Gear oil grades can also change with time due to viscosity changes that occur with usage. Gear oil lubricates gears in cars and industrial motor gear boxes. The higher numbers of a gear oil (e.g., 75W-140) do not mean that it has higher viscosity than an engine oil.
